Big News, Little Sleep? No Problem

Local Beat is NJ News Commons’ weekly roundup of the best and most topical reporting from local news sites around New Jersey.

Sleep deprivation seems to be a recurring theme for Jerry DeMarco of Cliffview Pilot. This week, he broke two huge stories within two days. DeMarco was first on the scene to report a DWI collision, the first to ID the police officer involved — and his condition — and the first to ID the driver charged. DeMarco was also the first to break the story of the shooting of an undercover cop in Garfield.

The veteran police reporter will be speaking at our Innovating the Local News Ecosystem Conference tomorrow at Montclair State University on the subject of “Setting Your News Metabolism.”

In other news, looks at the fancy college offers coming in to Verona High School’s class of 2014, and Blogfinger alerts readers about changes in yard sale ordinances in order to save a few dollars if they wait to buy permits.

In case you missed it, New Jersey Arts News produced a dazzling video of the 2014 “Living Local Expo,” featuring a municipal curbside composting program in Princeton and abundant produce from Mercer County’s many local farms.
