Learn Basic Data Visualization from WNYC’s John Keefe

john-keefeWNYC’s John Keefe is one of the most well-known names in data journalism today and he will be coming to the Center of Cooperative Media at Montclair State University on Monday April 8 to teach basic data mapping skills.

The class, to be held from noon to 3 p.m., in Schmitt Hall 311, is open to all partners of the NJ News Commons and members of their staffs, as well as members of Hack Jersey. The class is free of charge but seating is limited. Please RSVP to Debbie Galant.

Keefe, who is Senior Editor for Data News & Data Journalism Technology at WNYC, ran WNYC’s news operations for nine years. But after taking a basic programming class at an Online News Association meeting a few years ago, he made a major career detour into the field of data journalism.

Keefe will also tell us about WNYC’s innovative Cicada Tracking project and show us the home-made cicada sensors that are part of the crowdsourced science project. There may be an opportunity to build a sensor following the class.
