No Vacation for Local News

Perhaps things are slowing down in Trenton or on the campaign trail in the waning days of August, but not so for New Jersey’s local news media.

Carolyne Volpe Curley of West Essex TAP provides us with the blow-by-blow details in the murder of an 81-year-old woman in Fairfield — allegedly at the hands of her daughter. From arrest to trial to sentencing, this tragic story reads like a television movie.

Jerry DeMarco writes that crime and police stories are the bread and butter of Cliffview Pilot, where he tells us he’s been working 17-hour days keeping up with breaking news in Bergen County  — such as a a traffic stop involving a freeholder and the resulting battle between two police agencies.

However, DeMarco reports, “One of my biggest stories this week was the closing of the carousel, after more than 35 years, at the Paramus Park Mall.”

Livingston TAP keeps chronicling what appears to be a strained relationship between the police and the Township administrator — the most recent story involves police and fleet maintenance.

Meanwhile, Cherry Hill Patch reports on a rare phenomenon: a shrinking town budget with 0% tax hikes. And  West Orange TAP and West Orange Patch have the story of how the West Orange PD hosted the largest “active shooter drill” in the state — and perhaps the country — on Tuesday.

And while Ocean Grove residents are excited that a “seedy fleabag” hotel will soon be replaced by four new single-family homes, Blogfinger reports that the community is struggling with what is to become of the residents of the soon-to-be-demolished former hotel.

Finally, the folks at Ocean Signal aren’t happy about the Stronger Than The Storm campaign — hence their protest use of the hashtag #stts in all their tweets. Read about it here.
