Cory Booker relinquished his role as Newark mayor to become U.S. Senator yesterday. Booker is just the 4th African-American to be elected to the U.S. Senate and the 9th to serve. But those aren’t the only stunning numbers: Sarah Gonzalez of NJPR pointed out that the last time Newark sent someone to the U.S. Senate was 1863.
Booker’s history-making election and inauguration made the front page of The Star-Ledger. The Asbury Park Press’s story led with the fact that Booker and Senator Robert Menendez together make NJ the first state to be represented in the U.S. Senate by a Latino and an African-American at the same time.
Politico noted that Booker already faced key votes in his new role.
In more sober news: Although the actual date is three weeks away, The Record is wasting no time in commemorating 50 years since President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Several stories grace today’s front page of the paper (and can be found on the website).
