The launch of Northwest Bergen Press last week proved once again that hyperlocal news is alive and well in New Jersey.
The site is a cooperative partnership between publisher Rebecca Abma (of Midland Park Press), breaking news editor Jerry DeMarco (of Cliffview Pilot), managing editor Alana Quartuccio, community editor Stephanie Schwartz, marketing director Kenneth Lang, graphic artist Naina Lal, and web mistress Kate Gilbert of WordPress Super Service.
Abma writes that the concept behind Northwest Bergen Press is “that people often travel and do business within specific geographical boundaries that aren’t defined so much by zip codes as by geographic landmarks. Northwest Bergen Press serves the 13 communities north of Route 4 and west of Route 17.”
The site’s first big project is a compilation of the lists of more than 300 men and women from the region who died in service to their country.
“This required a mix of old-fashioned gum shoe reporting and googling to verify the lists are accurate,” wrote Abma. “We also compiled individual lists for each community we serve — Allendale, Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, Oakland, Ramsey, Ridgewood, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Waldwick and Wyckoff.”
