Is it the right word for today? As NJ News Commons Director Debbie Galant writes in her latest Dodge Blog entry, the “A-word” seems inappropriate to some in reporting on major disasters and tragic events.
The New Jersey news media are to be commended in not treating the one-year Sandy mark as a sensation but as a moment to spotlight a year of grueling, day-to-day reporting on the aftermath and recovery from the superstorm. Following on yesterday’s aggregation, we’ve linked to more stories below.
NJ Spotlight has created a widget that any media outlet can use to embed some of Scott Gurian’s Sandy reporting over the past year. Gurian has been on the Sandy recovery beat for both NJPR and NJ Spotlight through a grant from the NJ Recovery Fund.
AOL is smartly using the Jersey Shore Patches as a ‘stringer network’ to get good local coverage on the Sandy one-year observation. Regional Editor Tom Davis has been directing the coverage for Patch in South Jersey and at the Jersey Shore. The Asbury Park Press, The Record and The Star-Ledger/NJ.comhave special online sections marking the year. NJTV will devote its half-hour news program tonight to the anniversary.

On the election front, the NY Times’ public editor Margaret Sullivan examined a complaint from the Christie administration over a front-page story alleging that a 43-count indictment against a Christie ally was “quashed.” And NJ News Commons conducted a podcast with John Mooney of NJ Spotlight and Darryl Isherwood (now with NJ.com, late of PolitckerNJ) discussing the gubernatorial elections as well as legislative races and the minimum wage ballot question (available for embed).
