News media watchers around the state and region — as well as readers — were relieved to hear that the Star-Ledger ownership has reached an agreement with four unions and will avoid a shut-down at the end of the year. The state’s largest paper, however, still continues to lose millions of dollars annually; details of the agreement are not yet known but are reported to include buy-outs.
Guns are in the news yet again: Earlier this week, the father of the four-year-old Toms River boy who shot and killed his 6-year-old friend was indicted by a grand jury on several counts of child endangerment. In April, the four-year-old found an unsecured .22 caliber rifle and fired a single shot at Brandon Holt, who died the next day.
We’re finding the Cory Booker/stripper Twitter dust-up somewhat bemusing. After Buzzfeed’s original, highly criticized piece, the story has been picked up by the likes of Time.com, The New York Times and the LA Times. Perhaps it is a net-positive for Booker since it doesn’t involve Steve Lonegan standing outside of a residence/office building asking questions about derelict housing or law firm payments.
A more serious story that was widely covered by media in New Jersey was the state Supreme Court’s ruling on affordable housing: see The Record, NewsWorks, NJ Spotlight (with an interactive map!), the Philadelphia Inquirer, WBGO News, and NJ Today among others. Nice job, NJ media!
And some late breaking news: A New Jersey judge has ruled for marriage equality and Gov. Christie vows to appeal the decision. Read more here.
