While sports fans may be basking in that Jets win over the Patriots, the biggest news in the Garden State by far this weekend was a judge upholding Oct. 21 as the day when same-sex marriage becomes legal in NJ.
Confusion reigned in many towns on Thursday because the state registrar told cities they could not accept gay marriage applications. But after a Friday ruling by the state Supreme Court upholding the date, licenses were being issued. The real celebrating began at 12:01 a.m. this morning as Cory Booker performed his first marriage as mayor. Later in the morning, Gov. Christie made more news as his administration withdrew it’s appeal of Judge Mary Jacobson’s original September ruling supporting same-sex marriage.
Now that the government shutdown is over, Americans are beginning to focus more on the rollout of the ACA and the healthcare exchanges. Dan Goldberg has a terrific piece in the Star-Ledger (on NJ.com) detailing the good, the bad and the complex regarding health care reform in New Jersey. Meanwhile, Dr. Paul Goldfinger of Blogfinger in Ocean Grove brings his personal experience to his coverage.
Here’s some possibly conflicting news: a Monmouth University poll released this morning reports that New Jerseyans are rating quality of life higher. Meanwhile, NJ Transit is seeing an increase of suicides on its tracks.
In politics, Booker prepares for his transition to U.S. Senator, and Bob Braun, who wrote for the Star-Ledger for nearly 50 years takes the paper to task for endorsing Chris Christie. And while NJ Spotlight also covers marriage equality and health care reform, the site begins a new series on transportation challenges in the state today.
